Detroit-based Sherwood Food Distributors to receive
JVS Business Leadership Award

Sherwood Food Distributors (SFD) will be presented with the 2010 Business Leadership Award at JVS’s 13th annual Strictly Business Networking at Awards Luncheon, June 15, at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn. More than 600 business and community leaders are expected to attend the event to honor SFD and hear Honorary Chair and Keynote Speaker Peter Karmanos, Jr.
SFD partners Earl Ishbia and Alex Karp started their company, Regal Foods, on a shoestring in 1969. In 1987, they merged their company with Orleans International and formed Sherwood Food Distributors. Today, still based in Detroit, the meat and food distributor operates a network of warehouses in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia and Florida, with annual sales of $1.2 billion.
No one knows a business like an owner. Both Ishbia and Karp learned every aspect of their business, from bookkeeping to loading trucks to making sure deliveries were on time as hands-on operators. This experience enabled them to understand what their employees required to make them safe, productive, and valuable members of the SFD family.
The JVS Business Leadership Award is presented annually to a company that demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the vocational success of employees in the metropolitan Detroit area. “SFD historically has treated all of its 900 employees with dignity and respect and has established a true cooperative partnership with its Detroit warehouse employees and drivers who are members of the Teamsters local 337 for many years,” said Robert Finkel, a labor relations attorney who has represented the company’s union and labor relations matters for more than two decades.
